Description:

Measuring 26 1/4 inches in length, the main body of the crossbow is primarily constructed from walnut, with bone accent inlays on the sides and bottom, smooth bone buttplate, and the top surface covered in bone paneling, decorated with scroll and floral scrimshaw work and fitted with a folding steel notch rear sight. The prod is 25 1/2 inches long when strung, secured to the main body with woven sinew lines, and decorated with a woven cloth facing secured with six sections of cord adorned with red and white puffs. A folding single set trigger is present, as well as a thick steel pin for mounting a cocking apparatus. Similar bone accented examples have been attributed to Germany, mid-1500s; photocopies of consignor research are included.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with some loose and replaced bone panels, wear on the cords, and mild handling marks. The wood is very good with darkened, aged varnish with numerous scattered dents and scratches. Appears mostly intact, but the cord is frayed.
