Engraved and Gold Damascene Canon Barrel Flintlock Pistol with Silver Mounted and Carved Stock

This pistol was manufactured in Europe, likely the Balkans, in the early 19th century and has no visible maker's marks. Ottoman style Damascene floral patterns are on the lock plate, flash pan, frizzen, and breech. The lock has a waterproof style pan with gutters and a roller frizzen. The wedge fastened barrel has dense Damascus patterns and "wedding bands" at the transition from octagon to round and the muzzle. The stock has basket weave style carving on the forend and sides of the grip with carved borders, and there is floral scroll carving with textured backgrounds at the front of the forend and ahead of the trigger guard. The wedge escutcheons, trigger guard, and buttcap are a silver alloy and have raised relief floral patterns. The butt also has a horn border with carved designs. There is no ramrod channel. Many Ottoman and South Eastern European pistols did not have ramrod provisions because cavalrymen preferred to carry ramrods separate from the pistols with other reloading equipment where they were more secure.

ConditionVery good. Much of the original gold Damascene remains, and the silver is partially bright and has some darker patina. The balance of the barrel and lock have a dark brown patina. The patterns on the barrel are distinct, and there is some minor wear at the muzzle. The stock is good. The most significant wear is the extensive chipping visible along the edges of the butt. The carving remains distinct. The lock functions very well. This is a very attractive example of a pistol from the late flintlock era.
