Outstanding Whitney Navy Model Percussion Revolver with New Jersey Markings

This example of a Whitney Navy Model Revolver falls into the Second Model, 3rd Type serial number range (13,000-15,000), and has the eagle, lion, naval engagement, and shield cylinder scene and the correct 3rd type wedge latch. The matching serial number is on the bottom of the barrel, rear face of the cylinder, and underside of the grips. The New Jersey "NJ" property mark is stamped on the left barrel flat and left side of the frame. The top barrel flat is stamped "E. WHITNEY/N. HAVEN". These revolvers were manufactured in the late 1850s and early 1860s and are high quality. Whitney's revolvers were the first practical solid frame revolvers manufactured in the U.S. New Jersey units fought in several major campaigns and battles during the Civil War such as 1st and 2nd Bull Run, the Seven Days Battles, Battle of South Mountain, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor.

ConditionExtremely fine. 85% plus of the bright original high polish blue and silver finish and rich case colors remain. The fading is mostly on the frame, and the exposed surfaces display a brown patina. The markings, including the cylinder scene, are crisp. The grips are fine and have mild edge wear and some flaking of the varnish. Mechanically excellent.
