Engraved Moore's Patent Belt Revolver with Holster and Research

Only five to eight thousand Moore's "Seven Shooter" belt revolvers were manufactured in the early 1860s. They are seen in 4, 5, and 6 inch barrel lengths. This example has the longer barrel that was best suited for military use. The barrel is marked "D. MOORE PATENT SEPT. 18, 1860," has a cone/post front sight, and the serial number on the bottom of the lug, and the brass frame has scroll and punch dot engraving, and silver plating. It is marked with "52" and small letter on all the major components. The belt holster is marked "D. C. Crowell/35th" over an unclear marking ("NJ"?). The included documents are for Lieutenant David Crowell of the 35th Regiment of New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. One document indicated he was certified disabled due to debilitating stomach issues that led to weakness and emaciation (almost certainly due to dysentery) in December of 1864. Earlier muster roll cards indicate he enrolled on September 15, 1863 and was present for most of his term of service indicating he was one of the lucky ones who survived being deathly ill in a Civil War camp.

ConditionVery good. The frame retains 70% of the original silver plating and the barrel and cylinder are mostly gray with traces of blue and an overall aged patina. The balance has gray and brown patina and some minor oxidation/pitting on the barrel. The slightly undersize grip is very good with mild edge wear and some scattered dings. The action functions fine, and the markings and engraving patterns are crisp. The holster is very good for its age and has mostly rub type wear on the flap. The inside of the flap where the marking is has been treated with something of an unknown origin, to make the marking more legible.
