Unique and Rare Japanese Percussion Single Shot Pistol Disguised as a Tanto

Patterned after an aikuchi-style tanto, with matching wood saya and grip. Aside from the center mounted hammer and trigger, there are few outward signs of the weapon's function. The saya has a downward curvature that would be proper for a blade sheath, a proper kurigata 1 1/2" down from the brass koiguchi and, when closed, doubles as a protective cover for the nipple. Drawing the "blade" reveals the octagon barrel, which is unadorned and fitted with a percussion nipple on the top flat. Brass frame, with scroll engraving on either side, silver finished brass hammer with iron striker insert and brass trigger with a front curve ending in a fancy scroll. Wood highly figured grip, with a gentle downward curve matching that of the saya, gently rounded butt and a lanyard hole with silver floral pattern eyelets.

ConditionVery fine. The barrel shows a mixed brown patina with bright gray along the edges and light spotting. Fine color on the frame with a speckled, almost gold color on the top and a deeper aged mustard color on the sides and bottom and near black in the engraving for an attractive contrast. Most of the original silver remains on the hammer and trigger, having turned a dark patina with fine aged brass in the exposed areas. Wood is excellent, with a few tiny cracks, mild pressure dents and handling marks. Mechanically fine.
