Signed Japanese Sword in Tachi Style Fittings

Measuring 38 1/2 inches overall, this sword features a 27 3/4 inch blade with a very wavy hamon, well defined visible grain, and a copper habaki with gilt finish on the front and back and niello silver on the sides. The four-lobed tsuba is iron, with gold-veined leaf designs on the fuchi and kashira, gilt damask cloth underneath the grip wrap, and leaf-shaped menuki. The saya has a similar cloth wrapping, with a pair of tachi-style suspension bands and a purple cord. Two mekugi-ana are present on the tang, with an untranslated 5-figure signature on the right side. Notes from the consignor attribute the blade to the 15th century.

ConditionVery good as professionally polished, showing a few light handling marks and a small amount of spotting on the attractive blade, a few stains and scuffs on the wrap, and a mixed brown patina on the fittings. The saya is fair, with some fabric loss and scuffing.
