Description:

This is a very fine example of a scarce late production, Mauser Model 1896 large ring broomhandle pistol that has the desirable Von Lengerke & Detmold Marked Frame panel. The Von Lengerke & Detmold company was one of the earliest importer and sporting goods stores in New York City. It was established in 1882 and was eventually sold in 1928 to Abercrombie and Fitch company. The chamber area has the standard three-line Mauser factory markings with the left side stamped wit the single crown/U mauser proof mark. The left center panel was prominently stamped: "VON LENGERKE/& DETMOLD/NEW-YORK". It has the 1000-yard tangent rear sight with the large ring hammer. The right side of the barrel extension has a small Mauser factory "antler" firing/acceptance proof. Matching numbers are present on the barrel, follower, bolt, large ring hammer, hammer housing, and frame with a short niter blue safety, lanyard ring, and 34-groove grips.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 70% of the original blue finish overall showing wear and blue loss on the edges and high spots overall. The walnut grips are in very good condition overall with both sides showing handling marks overall with some light gouges on the lower right side with a dark tone around the edges. The left side of the chamber/receiver area, the bolt, and rear sight all show signs of some very minor light erosion or pitting from sitting in a holster. Mechanically excellent. Still a very scarce early Mauser model 1896 pistol with retailer markings.
