Description:

This is a very fine example of a very desirable late production Mauser Model 1896 large ring, flat side broomhandle pistol that has the desirable Von Lengerke & Detmold Marked Frame panel. The Von Lengerke & Detmold company was one of the earliest importer and sporting goods stores in New York City that eventually became the one of the major importers of German Mauser and Luger pistols prior to WWI. It was established in 1882 and was eventually sold in 1928 to Abercrombie and Fitch company. The chamber area has the standard three-line Mauser factory markings with the left side stamped with the double crown/U mauser proof mark. The left side is prominently stamped: "VON LENGERKE/& DETMOLD/NEW-YORK". It has the early features such as the 1000-yard tangent rear sight with the bead front sight, the large ring hammer, flat side frame, long extractor with the new style breech block with the round fining pin without the dovetailed retainer block. The right side of the barrel extension has a small Mauser factory "antler" firing/acceptance proof. It is complete with its original matching walnut shoulder stock/holster. The stock has no visible proofs and the attaching iron is correctly numbered "27221" which matches the pistol. Matching numbers are present on the barrel, follower, bolt, large ring hammer, hammer housing and frame, with a short niter blue safety, lanyard ring, and 23-groove grips.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 90% of the slightly faded original blue finish overall, showing minor edge and high spot wear with generalized thinning on the side of the frame and grip straps. The smaller parts retain 80% of their heat blued finish with the extractor being a replacement which has been recolored. The grips are in very fine condition with 85% of their varnish finish with nice color on both sides, and minor wear on the edges. The refinished shoulder stock is in very good condition overall with the wood having been lightly sanded and reoiled with the reblued attaching iron showing 85% of its blue finish. A nice late large ring Mauser Model 1896 pistol rig.
