Identified Whitney Pocket Model Percussion Revolver with Inscribed Holster and Research

This revolver is a Second Model and falls after the generally accepted First Type range, but does not have a clear "WHITNEYVILLE" marking. Only 8,000 of the First Type and around 4,000 of the Second Type revolvers are estimated to have been manufactured in the late 1850s and early 1860s. It has the standard "E. WHITNEY/N. HAVEN" mark on the barrel, the lion and shield cylinder scene, rounded grip juncture, brass post front sight, frame groove rear sight, and smooth grips with the matching serial number below "DP" stamped on their undersides. Included with the revolver is a copy of a declaration for widow's pension applied for by Mary Ann Marks, the widow of Major John Louis Marks who led the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia Salem Cadets during the Civil War. The unit garrisoned Fort Warren after mustering in May 1862. The brown leather holster is marked "JLM" on the back to the right of the loop and "Major J. L. Marks" on the body under the flap. Few original Civil War holsters survive, especially those with inscriptions.

ConditionFine. The barrel and cylinder retain 75% of the bright original high polish blue finish, and the loading lever and hammer have 40% original case colors. The finish on the frame has mostly faded to gray and brown patina, and there is some light pitting. The trigger guard has a dark, aged patina. The grips are fine and have moderate edge wear including some chipping on the left and otherwise have smooth, oiled surfaces. The action functions fine, and the markings are crisp. The holster is fair and has crackling, rub wear, and a slight tear on the flap. The markings are faint, but mostly legible. This is a fine example of a rare Whitney revolver complete with identified holster.
