Description:

These New Model Army revolvers were the second most popularly used revolvers by the Union. They were initially used to supplement Colt's revolvers, but after the fire at the Colt factory in 1864 became the primary revolvers purchased and issued. Many were also used in the West in the decades following the war either in original percussion configuration or converted for metallic cartridges. Buffalo Bill Cody was among the New Model Army's users and said that his never failed him during the many years it was on his hip. He fought many battles with it as his side. This example has the standard markings including small sub-inspection marks, a "pinched" blade front sight, frame groove rear sight, and Orville Ainsworth's script "O.W.A" cartouche on the left grip panel. A spare hammer and a military style flap holster are included. The consignor's notes state the holster was handmade and used by a Confederate soldier.

Rating Definition:

Fine. 40% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish remains. The brass has an attractive aged "mustard yellow" patina, and there are subdued case colors on the hammers. The balance has smooth brown and gray patina. The action currently does not function properly due to the hammer not locking at half or full cock, but the included spare hammer may fix it. The grips are fine and have some small dents and chips. The cartouche is legible, and the other markings are crisp. The holster has well worn leather but is in fine overall condition and is complete.
