Civil War Era Martially Inspected Starr 1858 Double Action Army Revolver

An estimated 23,000 of these revolvers were manufactured in the late 1850s and early 1860s, and most were purchased by the U.S. Government. This example has the standard "STARR. ARMS. CO. NEW. YORK." address on left side of frame and "STARR'S PATENT JAN. 15, 1856" on the right. The serial numbers match on the front of the barrel lug, receiver, cylinder, in the hammer well, and front of the hammer. There are small inspection marks on some components. The revolver is fitted with a smooth one piece walnut grip with a cartouche on each side. "ABB" (A.B. Blackington 1860-1862) is on the left side, and "CSL" ( Major Charles S. Lowell 1858-1861) is on the right. The matching serial number is marked on several components, and an intertwined "JG" is stamped on the front of the frame at the hinge.

ConditionFine as partially refinished (cylinder). 75% plus of the original blue finish remains on the balance. There is some brown and gray patina where the finish has faded on the muzzle and grip straps. The rear of the loading lever and the hammer have brilliant original case colors. There is some mild pitting under the blue on the cylinder. The barrel and loading lever have scattered patches of shallow pitting and some scattered dings and scratches throughout. The grip is very good with sharp cartouches, small dings and scrapes. The markings are crisp throughout, and the action functions excellently.
