Civil War Savage Navy Model Percussion Revolver

Approximately 20,000 of these revolvers were manufactured in 1861 and 1862. 11,984 were purchased by the government for the U.S. Army and Navy with the remainder sold on the open market. Units known to have been issued Savage Navies include: Union-1st Wisconsin U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, 2nd Wisconsin U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, 5th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry, and the 7th New York Cavalry and Confederate- 34th Battalion of Virginia Cavalry, 35th Battalion of Virginia Cavalry, 11th Texas Cavalry, 7th Virginia Cavalry and the 7th Missouri Cavalry. This example is one of the commercial guns and has no inspection markings. The top strap is marked "SAVAGE R.F.A. Co. MIDDLETOWN. CT./H.S.NORTH PATENTED JUNE 17 1856/JANUARY 18 1859. MAY 15 1860." The serial number is stamped on the right side of the grip frame and marked on the underside of the grips. It has brass cone front and notch rear sights. The left grip panel has a later carved "WAJ" cartouche.

ConditionVery good plus. There are traces of original finish including subdued case colors on the loading lever. The revolver primarily displays gray and brown patinas and has some light oxidation. The grips are very good with chipping and edge wear and some scratches. The action functions fine, and the markings are clear.
