Desirable U.S. Springfield M1C Garand Sniper Rifle with M1 Research and Verification Letter

Developed in late 1944 as a sniper rifle version of the M1 Garand, the M1C rifle was manufactured by Springfield Armory and is fitted with a late manufacture M82 Telescopic Sight, M1C mount, leather cheek piece and WWII canvas sling. This desirable rifle is accompanied by a letter from David McCallum verifying that this rifle is an original M1C sniper rifle that was formerly in the Burt Kellerstedt collection. These M1C rifles were used in late WWII, again in Korea and even into the early days of Vietnam by both the Army and USMC, until the development of the M21 and M40 sniper rifles. This rifle has a gray/green arsenal refurbished parkerizing with the following parts; a late WWII barrel marked "SA-11-44" along with a modified operating rod marked: "D35382-6-SA", an earlier bolt marked "D28287-12-SA", trigger housing marked "D28290-12-SA", stamped trigger guard. It is fitted with the late war locking bar type rear sight, and wide base gas cylinder and a round top gas cylinder lock and four-slot gas cylinder plug. The scope bracket (only) is matching to the rifle and is stamped on the underside "3370626". This rifle is fitted with a blued, WWII type G&H mount that has the Griffin & Howe company markings on top, numbered "3373165" on the back side. The mount is fitted with an original late production blued M82 telescopic sight. This was one of the original WWII scopes issued with this style of sniper rifle. The M82 telescopic sight has the correct post reticle and is roll-stamped in three lines on the left side "TELESCOPE M82/SERIAL NO. 41598/STOCK NO. F001-0084688". The telescope is complete with the rubber eyepiece, sliding sun shade and windage and elevation knob covers with part numbers on the top. The stock is fitted with a correct, late WWII lace-on leather cheekpiece. The left side of the cheekpiece is stamped "K-Line", who was the original WWII manufacturer of these items for the Army. The rifle is fitted with an original WWII stock that is stamped on the left side with a late WWII boxed "S.A./N.F.R./Crossed Cannon" cartouche with a full and partial circled "P" firing proof on the pistol grip area. It is complete with a M1C flash hider Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) green plastic case. Provenance: Burt Kellerstedt Collection.

ConditionVery fine with 95% plus of the arsenal refurbished gray/green parkerized finish. The blued Griffin and Howe scope mount has 85% of the original finish intact; the M82 telescopic sight has 97% of the blued finish on exposed areas; there appears to be some light rust under the rubber eyepiece. The stock shows light handling but is in fine condition overall with a legible cartouche. There is one minor repaired area in the left side of the stock directly below the handguard grip. An authentic U.S. Springfield M1C sniper rifle with verification letter by M1C expert David McClain.
