Description:

This is an unique example of a very desirable post Vietnam built Remington Model 700/M40 type sniper rifle. The first Remington M40s were all hand built at Quantico and used by the Marine Corps throughout Vietnam and are still in use today in the latest updated configuration i.e. the M40A5 sniper rifle. This example was to duplicate the original M40 sniper rifle using the various original configuration type Remington parts. The receiver itself is an early model manufactured circa 1966/67 marked Remington 700 on the left side along with the serial number. It has "U.S." marked over the serial number. It is not stripper clip slotted and it does have an early design thumb relief cut at the rear of the ejection port. It is fitted with an original Remington M40 barrel that was refitted to this action. It has six lands and grooves, with the correct tapered profile that measures approximately .850 at the muzzle and 1.25 at the breech with the flat crown on the muzzle. It still retains it original Remington barrel codes on top of the breech area (at 12:00) with a set of barrel code stamps at 9:00 and 3:00 indicating that this barrel rotated and refitted to this action. It has the correct early style bolt that is numbered (electro-penciled) on the under side of the bolt body, "214631". It has the early blued bolt shroud with an original early style striker, still in the white. It has the early, correct safety and early split sear in the trigger assembly. The action has the early Remington one-piece aluminum trigger guard, floorplate and stamped, nickel plated follower. The rifle is fitted with a correct M40 style walnut stock with the early Remington monte-carlo style cheekpiece and "Remington" marked checkered steel buttplate. The stock is fitted with the early Remington 1 1/2 inch wide sling swivels and has a DOD cartouche on the left side. The stock has been properly glass-bedded in the action area with the barrel free-floated. It has been correctly numbered in the barrel channel with the rifle serial number and correctly stamped with the assembly numbers under the buttplate. The action has an early type Redfield one-piece scope base that has been numbered (214631) to match the rifle. The right front side has the small circled "R" Redfield logo. It has the early style 1 inch split rings that are stamped "64" on the underside. The front and rear rings have been numbered "1 and 2" on the lower half with the top portions being old, correct but blued replacements. They are of the correct vintage and type. It is fitted with a correct early green anodized Redfield 3X-9X Accu-Range telescopic sight. This scope has the unique early, built-in ranging reticle that has a standard medium cross-hair with two additional range estimation stadia wires above the cross-hair indicator. This was tied into a clear plastic, ranging scale (called a tombstone) inside the scope that allowed the shooter to accurate estimated ranges from 200-800 yards, by increasing or decreasing the power ring. Unfortunately the plastic scale or tombstone has become loose inside the scope. It has the correct early Redfield markings on the rear of the eyepiece. The original rifle serial number was removed from the scope, it was tapped off, repainted (flat black) and renumbered ( 214631) to match this rifle. The barrel, receiver, bolt, trigger guard, scope base and lower half of the scope rings have a light gray parkerized finish similar to that originally applied, with the top half of the scope rings blued. The bolt body was originally in the white and now has a brown patina type finish. The telescopic sight has an olive green anodized finish. The rifle serial number "214631" is stamped on the left side of the scope base and correctly electro-penciled on the left side of the scope tube and on the underside of the bolt. This unique rifle comes with only a photo-copy of a Government shipping document where this rifle was released from Quantico to the Oliver Springs Police Dept. The original owner noted in his assessment that Remington did not have a record of this rifles serial number which certainly could indicate that it was an actual Government purchase.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refurbished with 98% of the parkerized finish overall with only minor edge and high spot wear with some minor finish loss on the rear of the trigger guard and floorplate. The stock is in excellent condition with only very minor handling marks or scratches overall with a beautiful medium brown color overall. The cartouche is clear and distinct. The Redfield scope retains 98% of its original green anodized finish with edge wear on the rear eyepiece. The poser ring works correctly and the optics are clear and it has an intact ranging reticle, but missing the tombstone scale inside.
