U.S. Springfield Armory M1D Garand Sniper Rifle with M84 Telescopic Sight

Korean Conflict era M1D Garand Rifle manufactured and converted to M1D configuration by Springfield Armory. The rifle is fitted with a M84 telescopic sight. The telescopic sight has a sliding sunshade, rubber eyepiece, post and cross wire aperture and click adjustment knobs. The sight is blued and fitted with a data plate marked: "TELESCOPE/M84/SERIAL NO. 13543". The rifle has a stamped M2 Flash Hider manufactured by Hart Mfg. Co., a lace-on leather cheek piece marked "MRT/1-52" and an M1 web sling with "MRT" markings and an unreadable date. The rifle is accompanied by a copy of a government DD Form 1750 dated "6/87" that lists the items originally issued with the rifle. The rifle is an early production Springfield M1 Garand Rifle converted to M1D configuration at Springfield Armory in the early 1950s. The barrel is marked "SA/9-52" and the rifle has the late configuration operating rod, Type III rear sight and late pattern gas cylinder screw. Other components are a typical mixture manufacture and pattern; the bolt is Winchester marked and the trigger guard is a very early Springfield milled pattern with a drawing number stamped ahead of the safety lever, the receiver, barrel, trigger housing group and other components have the smooth gravy-green parkerized finish that is typical of early 1950 Springfield Armory production. The stock and hand guards are oil-finished walnut and has typical M1D markings. Two encircled "P" proof marks are stamped on front of the pistol grip. There is no visible inspection stamp on the left wrist and the cheek pad covers any SA overhaul markings that may be stamped on the left side of the stock. All M1D Rifles were manufactured using overhauled WWII production M1 Rifles. The first group of M1D Rifles was converted by Springfield Armory in the early 1950s. A second group of M1D Rifles were assembled by Tooele Army Depot during the late 1960s. The Tooele M1D Rifles typically have a rough gray parkerized finish and show less attention to detail in assembly.

ConditionThe rifle retains at least 99% of the arsenal parkerized finish and the telescopic sight has 99% of the blue finish. The scope optics are perfect and it appears to be in new condition. The markings on the receiver, barrel and other components are crisp. The stock and handguard retain nearly all of the original oil finish and show only very minimal storage wear. The leather cheek piece is in near new condition with bright leather and sharp "MRT" markings. This is an outstanding example of a M1D Sniper Rifle in un-issued condition with all of the original components. It appears to be one of the un-issued rifles released by the Civilian Marksmanship Program in the late 1990s. It would be very difficult to improve upon the condition of this rifle. M1D Rifles were the standard sniper rifle issued to U.S. Army Reserve and National Guard infantry units until the late 1980s.
