Description:

This revolver is pictured on page 12 of "The Rampant Colt" from Fall 2002. The factory letter indicates it was sold to the United States Navy Department and shipped in a 200 gun shipment on October 7, 1861, to Lt. Col. G. D. Ramsay at the Washington Arsenal. Only a few hundred revolvers are believed to have been purchased for the U.S. Navy, and a few hundred more were issued to the Army. The revolver is a standard Model 1861 Navy other than the unusual grip. The grip is made of walnut with inlaid antique ivory borders, dice, and Rampant Colt designs. The butt original read "-OLD- SMOKY," but the left butt panel is absent. "On Top of Old Smoky" is a American folk song of uncertain origins with Scots-Irish influence. With the revolver is a copy of the magazine mentioned above, other documents and photographs relating to the revolver, and a leather "Slim Jim" holster with tooled floral designs and white highlighting.

Rating Definition:

Poor. The revolver displays a gray patina and moderate pitting on the iron, and the brass has been polished back to mostly bright. The grip is fair aside from the missing plate. The action functions fine, and the markings are mostly obliterated. The holster is good with moderate storage and rub wear, some flaking, and areas of separation on the inner lining.
