Scarce Colt Model 1871-1872 Open Top Single Action Revolver

Highly prized by collectors for its limited production and significance as the first Colt revolver manufactured specifically for a metallic cartridge, the Model 1871-72 Open Top Revolver is the transition model between the Colt cartridge conversions and the solid frame Single Action Army Revolver. Approximately 7000 Model 1871-72 Revolvers were manufactured, with this example converted to center-fire by boring a proper hole through the recoil shield and replacing the striker on the hammer with a conical center-fire pin. Fixed blade and notch sights on the barrel, with the New York address on top and the spring loaded ejector rod on the right. On the left side of the frame is the 1871/1872 "Two July" patent dates, with a bored-through cylinder showing the Texas Navy battle scene, matching numbers, and a set of smooth one-piece grips.

ConditionVery good as converted to centerfire, with 40% of the period, possibly retailer applied nickel finish, showing strongest on the underside of the barrel and rear of the frame, with areas of mixed brown and gray patina, scattered light pitting, and handling marks overall. The attractively aged grip is also very good, with a few chips, and a number of age stress lines. The cylinder is battered and the half-cock is absent, otherwise mechanically functions slightly out of time.
