Pair of Long Barreled English Percussion Conversion Dueling Pistols by Rumbold

A) Rumbold Percussion Pistol

This pair of early 19th century pistols has blade front and "wing" rear sights, floral and shield designs engraved on the upper tangs, and a gold proof plate on top of each breech marked "RUMBOLD/ LEICESTER." The lock has border engraving, a burst pattern around the screw, scrollwork on the hammer, a drum-style conversion, high fence, sliding half-cock safety catch, and "RUMBOLD" marked ahead of the hammer. The checkered knob grip stocks have a horn tips. The wooden ramrods are bone tipped. The trigger guards have the later style pineapple finials and spurs. The silver thumb plates are inscribed "JB." The underside of the barrel of gun B has "NARROW TW" behind the wedge lug and both barrels have faint proofmarks on the bottom and on the breech plugs. William Rumbold appears in records as a gunmaker at 34 Sackville Street in Dublin at the beginning of the 19th century. Members of his extended family held important positions in the East India Company and British military during the 18th century.

ConditionFine. Nearly all of the gold inlay remains in the barrel hallmark. There is some bright, original finish and case colors in the protected areas, and the balance has primarily brown patina and light pitting. The ramrod pipe has been repaired. The stock is about fine with a crack below the lock, mostly crisp checkering, and various minor pressure marks. The lock functions very well and has a replacement hammer screw with a washer. The markings and engraving patterns are primarily crisp.
