19th Century American Percussion Target Rifle with Wesson Marked Heavy Barrel, False Muzzle, and Starter

This rifle has attributes similar to many manufactured in the 1850s in the northeast including those manufactured by the Wessons, especially Edwin. Some of these target rifles were used by the men of the U.S. Sharpshooters during the Civil War even after they received their Sharps rifles because these are the rifles they were intimately familiar with and could depend upon. This example has a heavy, part octagon barrel with slightly rebated muzzle cut for the included false muzzle and starter, a globe front sight, adjustable notch rear sight with long extension and also has a plain trigger, engraved hammer, German silver furniture, and half stock with patch box (patches inside). The only visible marking is "WESSON" on top of the octagonal section near the transition point. A wooden ramrod with brass tip is under the barrel.

ConditionVery good as partially period refinished (stock). The barrel retains 70% plus of the thinning blue finish and has some specks of oxidation. The lock has been cleaned bright and has some minor oil staining. The floral engraved hammer may be a replacement. The front sight globe is bent down but could be reshaped. The German silver components are mostly bright with light aging. The stock is fine as refinished and has some material absent from the right side of the forend, a tension crack at the lock screw, and some minor scratches. The lock functions fine and the Wesson marking is clear.
