Description:

Measuring 39 1/2 inches overall, this sword is equipped with a 28 inch blade, which shows a strong and straight hamon and is fitted with a silver finished copper habaki. The tsuba, saya and tsuka show extensive coverage of fine cloisonne enamel decoration, with repeating floral themes and renderings of the legendary fenghuang bird. The fenghuang is most prominent on the four-lobed tsuba, where it covers most of both sides, the remaining quarter occupied by a set of three silver and black paulownia leaves. Similar paulownia leaf arrangements, especially with the flowers seen elsewhere on the fittings, have a deep history in Japan, being used as an ancient symbol of the Imperial House, clan mon for Toyotomi, and in modern times associated with the government and Prime Minister of Japan. The tsuka follows the general curve of the blade, a trait associated with earlier tachi-length sword, as later production favored a straight grip, with additional fenghuang and paulownia leaf patterns on the brass fittings, rows of black dots dividing the cloisonne into four panels, and alternating off white and flesh tone backgrounds for the panels. This panel arrangement and furniture decoration is also present on the saya, which is fitted with a pair of suspension bands (blade edge down) with a red tassel cord woven between them.

Rating Definition:

Fine as partially restored. The blade shows a bright appearance overall, with areas of spotting and scattered dings. A few flat spots and nicks are present along the edge. The fittings are excellent, with bright color and fine detail throughout, showing a few small surface bubbles in the enamel and minor age cracks. A few spots of touched-up repair are visible on the saya, concentrated towards the tip. The fit of the blade to the tsuka is solid, with no play, though there is no obvious way to dismount it safely for tang inspection.
