Scarce Springfield Model 1847 Sappers and Miners Musketoon with Sword Bayonet

Only 830 of these musketoons were manufactured between 1847 and 1856, and 228 of them were altered to the artillery pattern. The main differences between this pattern and the artillery pattern are the front barrel band and the special bayonet fittings for the brass hilted sword bayonets. These rare sword bayonets were only manufacture for use with this model and few survive. Note that the included example has a socket on the left side of the guard that slips over the barrel, a groove on the left that locks onto the fittings on the right side of the barrel and front band, "scaled" grip, and leaf shaped blade. The leaf shape blade makes the bayonet more suited for hacking than thrusting and was thus useful as a tool as well as a weapon. It is marked "N. P. AMES/[C]ABOTVILLE/184[?]" on the left ricasso, "JS/[?]VT" on the right ricasso, and "4," "3," and "RC" on the right left side of the guard. The musketoon is marked with "SPRING/FIELD/1854" on the tail of the lock, the eagle motif at center, "1855" on the barrel tang, "V/P/eagle head" on the barrel near the breech, "T" on the left barrel flat, "US" on the buttplate tang, and "JT" on the left stock flat.

ConditionGood as cleaned and repaired. The iron surfaces are mostly bright and have some areas of light brown patina and minor oil stains. The ramrod has mild pitting. The stock has repairs at the rear barrel band spring, wrist, and butt and has been re-oiled. The restamped cartouche is spurious. The lock functions fine, and the markings are mostly crisp throughout. The bayonet is good and has a mostly bright heavily refinished sharpened blade, aged patina on the guard and grip, and minor cleaned over pitting and oxidation.
