Scarce U.S. Springfield Model 1847 Artillery Musketoon with Bayonet and Scabbard

Only an estimated 3,359 of these musketoons were manufactured in the late 1840s to late 1850s. They are similar to the Model 1847 Cavalry and Sappers musketoons but differ in their sights, bayonet lugs, front barrel bands, and ramrods. Total production of all the musketoons was only around 10,000 likely due to the poor reception they received from the cavalry due to the strong recoil, loose fitting ammunition, and poor accuracy. They were likely more well received by artillery and sappers units given they were easier to carry than the full sized muskets and these units were less likely to rely on the weapons to defend their lives. This example is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1852" and "eagle/US" on the lock plate, "1852" on the barrel tang, "V/P/eagle head" on the barrel at the breech, and "US" on the buttplate tang and bayonet. It has the correct style front sight, bayonet lug on the bottom of the barrel, and flared, iron ramrod.

ConditionGood as partially refinished (wood). The iron surfaces display gray and brown patina, mild pitting, and some vice/tool marks. The revarnished stock is also good and has numerous small dings, several small chips, and some mild scratches. The lock functions fine, and the markings are crisp. The bayonet is good and has oxidation and pitting. The scabbard is fair and has some crackling on the leather and dents on the brass tip.
