Description:

350,000 of these muskets were manufactured at Harpers Ferry in addition to the 325,000 manufactured at Springfield and smaller lots manufactured by various contractors. This example is dated 1840 and has the standard Type III markings, bayonet lug for the included socket bayonet, blade front sight on the rear of the forward barrel band, removable brass flash pan, sling swivels on the mid band and trigger guard, and stock with low comb and standard "US" buttplate. Many of the Type III muskets were converted to percussion.

Rating Definition:

Good. The iron surfaces have gray patina and light to mild pitting. The vent is rather large possibly from fitting a percussion bolster. The brass has an aged patina. The stock is fine and has various marks, scrapes, and small chips. The lock functions fine, and the primary markings are legible. The bayonet is very good and has some patches of pitting.
