Description:

This is a fine example of a unique early DWM Model 1902 Danzig Test Luger. For many years it was theorized that this series of Lugers was produced for an early 1902 Imperial German Army tests. Recently it has been speculated that these were actually manufactured in late 1903 possibly for the Dutch. Regardless of the true meaning it is estimated that approximately 50 were produced in this series and they fall into a generally accepted serial number range of 22,300-22,400 with this one being about right in the middle of the range. These pistols have all the early characteristics of the 1902 design with the dished toggles with toggle lock on the right side, flat recessed breechblock, grip safety and the old style short barrel extension and frame. This example is chambered in 7.65mm Luger caliber. There are no factory markings on these Lugers (not even the DWM Logo) except for a small Script letter "D" proof. On this example it has the early script letter "D" proof (with the three lobes) that is located on the left side of the barrel extension and the rear of the frame. These pistols were numbered in the commercial manner with the full serial number (22365) on the frame and underside of the barrel with the last 2-3 digits of the serial number on the various smaller parts. The pistol has a rust blued finish overall with the small components have the correct straw colored finish and it is fitted with a set of unnumbered checkered walnut grips. It is complete with a nickel plated magazine with a unmarked wooden base.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% of the faded original blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear with some minor scratching and thinning on the grip straps. There is a small spot of corrosion on the left rear side of the barrel. The smaller parts retain 50% of the original straw colors overall with slightly more color in the protected areas. The grips are in fine condition with a chip of wood missing under the safety lever, nice distinct condition on the balance showing minor/light wear across the tops of the checkering. Mechanically excellent. This scarce and unique early Luger has all matching numbers.
