Description:

This pistol has a Model 1891 frame, aftermarket sights and grip cap, and Model 1901 style barrel, forearm and grip. "J. P. LOWER" is stamped on the top of the barrel ahead of the adjustable leaf target rear sight and "REMINGTON ARMS Co. ILION. N.Y. U.S.A." behind the high blade front sight. The bottom of the barrel is marked "44 S&W. R" ahead of the forend and "H" and "2518" under the forearm. The inside of the forearm is marked "J. P. LOWER 2518." The left side of the frame has the standard two-line address and patent marking as well as the government marking "P S" found on the Model 1891 rolling block pistols. The front strap inlet on the grip has "2968," and the left side of the grip straps is marked "3635" and "3710." John Prey Lower (1833-1917) was a popular western gunsmith and retailer primarily based in Denver in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Among his customers were Buffalo Bill Cody, Kit Carson, members of the Custer family, local Native Americans, and many pioneers. Lower was also a talented marksman himself. He is sometimes said to be the first firearms retailer west of the Mississippi, but this obviously leaves out generations of gunsmiths and merchants in St. Louis. Many custom firearms were manufactured and sold through his shop over the years, but most were rifles.

Rating Definition:

Fine as refinished retailer altered. 80% of the blue finish remains on the barrel and frame. The grip straps have strong torch case colors. The wood is very fine and has crisp checkering and only minor handling and storage type marks. The action functions excellently, and the markings are crisp (some have white fill).
