Description:

This factory store display cabinet was manufactured by the Walrus Manufacturing Company in the early 1900s to aid Winchester dealers in displaying their Model 1894's and other Winchester long guns. The manufacturers gold plaque is on the bottom of the case in the center. The "Walrus Quality" manufacturer's badge is unique, being embossed and enameled, opposed to simply stamped. The number "6984" is stenciled on an interior side panel of the cabinet. It is constructed of hardwood, possibly walnut, with full Depression glass panels and a cathedral top with glass panels. It stands 75 inches in height on four legs, and each side is 17 3/4 inches wide. The inside height is 56 inches. There is a full length door stamped "740" on the top. On the inside is a four sided rack that will hold 20 long guns. All four sides are 5/8 inch thick and are marked "WINCHESTER" in white and black bordered red letters with black lettered "PATENT APPLIED FOR" on a white background below. On the inside frame are four replacement brackets to help support the rack. The bottom of the case and the inner edge of the rack is lined with green felt. The cabinet legs have the original brass fittings. This style of cabinet is pictured on page 201 in the book "Winchester Rarities" by Thomas Webster and David D. Kolowski.

Rating Definition:

Fine with a light old overcoat of protective oil finish applied on the exterior. The aforementioned varnish is crazing, and the glass has a some minor scattered scratches. The wood has minor scattered scratches and dings overall. The felt on the bottom and inside of the rack has a few minor stains. The brass fittings have a dark aged patina. Modern L brackets have been added underneath the interior shelf. The writer feels it is one of the ultimate Winchester promotional items ever made and would make a fine addition to any Winchester collection!
