Description:

The included letter from Bill Furnish indicates that only a few of these shotguns are known and they may have been produced as presentation pieces. None but this example had been seen with a cleaning rod attached as of Jan. 1987. This example has a wooden rod with brass tips (one threaded for an extension). Furnish notes that this gun would have been around $80 in 1878 based on the catalog listings which would have made it comparable to the double barrels in cost and would have been very expensive for the time. He also notes that the compartments in the buttplate for additional ammunition were uncommon in American-made guns, especially shotguns. It has a single bead sight at the front of the solid rib and "E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION NEW-YORK. U.S.A." inlaid in gold towards the breech on the Damascus barrel. The latter suggest the shotgun was manufactured prior to the reorganization of the business as Remington Arms Company in 1886. A "C" is stamped at the junction with the rib and action. The underside of the barrel has a series of Belgian proofs, such as the circle "L/EG" proof followed by a firing proof. The underside of the receiver and barrel are both stamped with the serial number "11". The upper tang is marked "REMINGTON'S ILION N.Y. U.S.A./PAT. MAY 3rd NOV 15th 1864 APRIL 17th 1866." The action is casehardened and engraved with scrollwork along with scenes with a pair of dogs on each side; a patriotic eagle, shield and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" motif on the top; and a stag on the trigger guard. The buttplate tang, forend cap, and the screw heads are also engraved. The straight wrist stock and forearm have multi-point checkering.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as refinished (consignor indicates possibly by the factory). The barrel retains 95% plus brown finish and has strong Damascus patterns. There is some dings on the rib on each side towards the breech. Strong case colors remain on the balance. The refinished stock and forearm are both very fine with crisp carving and only some light handling and storage marks. The action functions fine, and the markings and engraving patterns are crisp throughout. This is an attractive and unusual Remington shotgun.
