Desirable Pre-World War I U.S. Rock Island Arsenal Model 1903 Bolt Action Rifle with N.R.A. Sales Markings

This is a scarce example of an early 1913 dated Model 1903 rifle. These were the last of the pre-WWI rifles manufactured by Rock Island Arsenal before production ceased in late 1913/early 1914. They are scarce due to considerably smaller production than Springfield. Those with N.R.A. Sales markings are even rarer. These markings usually indicate a commercial sale to an N.R.A. member and also indicate that their barrels were air-gaged to ensure they were the most accurate available. The receiver has the standard four-line markings, and the barrel is roll stamped "R.I.A./flaming bomb/3-13." The underside of the barrel is stamped with the barrel steel code of "R/22/P." It has the standard blade front sight and the early musket rear sight with dished windage and elevation knobs and a polished face that is graduated from 100-2,700 yards and has a 2,850 yard volley notch. The straight handled bolt is stamped "C13" on the front of the safety lug. The floor plate is stamped with a flaming bomb over "N.R.A." It is fitted with walnut straight grip stock with a single stock bolt and grasping grooves. The left side has a boxed "C.N./1913" cartouche with flattened corners, and a script "P" proof is on the underside behind the trigger guard. The front of the forend is correctly stamped with a "S" indicating manufacture at R.I.A. It is fitted with a checkered steel buttplate with trapdoor.

ConditionFine with 50% of the original blued/casehardened finish overall with the exposed section of the receiver having flaked off (a common problem with RIA 1903 rifles). The trigger guard and floor plate also show minor blue wear and thinning overall. The stock and handguard have both been lightly cleaned and reoiled and now have a honey colored oil finish overall. The otherwise fine stock cartouche and proofs are distinct. The Ordnance Flame/Shell and N.R.A. markings on the trigger are clear and deep. This is a solid representative example of a late, pre-WWI production Model 1903 rifle with rare N.R.A. markings.
