Description:

This is an early 1930 manufactured Springfield M1903 service rifle, issued by the U.S. Marine Corps. Standard Springfield Armory receiver markings over "1353844", original barrel is stamped: SA-4-30. The rifle was refurbished by the USMC., in the late 1930s early 1940s, as it has the classic "light olive green" Marine Corp colored parkerized finish with an all blued, numbered bolt. The bolt is marked "BF-47" with the rifle's matching serial number (1353844) correctly etched on the bolt body. Only the USMC numbered their bolts after they checkered rifle headspace, the Army did not. The receiver was also correctly modified with the "1936 Hatcher" gas escape hole in the left side and the right side has the additional "hardness test" punch mark on the reinforcing lug; both operation were performed by the Navy/USMC Philadelphia Ordnance Depot USMC rifle were refurbished and reissued. Has the correct all milled components, with the same matching olive green parkerize finish, to include the barrel bands, trigger guard assembly and milled buttplate and a all blued rear sight. Fitted with a early WWII issue 1903 (not A3) two bolt, straight grip walnut stock and a WWII walnut handguard; both typically used by the Marines for rebuilding their rifles in early WWII. It comes with a blued front sight cover.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 99% of the refurbished parkerized/blue finish overall. The stock and handguard are also both in excellent condition with only a couple of minor handling marks. The bore is excellent and it was probably never reissued after being rebuilt. It would be hard to find a better WWII USMC issue 1903 rifle.

B) Springfield Armory Model 1903 Rifle with USMC Marked Sedgley Barrel

Manufacturer: Springfield Armory U.S.

Barrel: 24 inch round
Finish: parkerize

Item Views: 6459
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 270
Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun
Description:

This is another classic WWII USMC issue M1903 Springfield Armory manufactured rifle. The rifle was manufactured in 1914 and falls into the noted serial number range of other WWI USMC issue 1903 rifles. It was rebuilt in late 1941/42, and fitted with a USMC marked Sedgley replacement barrel. The barrel is stamped: U.S.M.C./9-41" over the circled "S" Sedgley company logo. The receiver was modified with the 1936 Hatcher gas escape hole on the left side. During WWII only the Marine Corps used "U.S.M.C." marked Sedgley contract barrels. This rifle has been fitted with the rare USMC issue "No 10" front and rear sights set that includes the larger USMC front sight cover. These were late war improved sights with a wider front blade with only a single sighting hole aperture in the rear sight which provided a better sight picture. These sights have also been noted on USMC 1903 (1941 Model) Sniper rifles. It has its original early straight handle, blued bolt, milled barrel bands and milled trigger guard assembly. It is fitted with a WWI "S" style straight grip, finger groove stock that has a small "AAK" proof on the left side and a stamped checkered buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine condition with 95% of the WWII USMC refurbished parkerized finish overall, with thinning and finish loss on top of the receiver and bolt from handling and use. The stock and handguard are both in very good condition after being refurbished, showing a medium brown color overall with some minor handling marks and pressure dents on the underside. There is a small stress crack starting at the rear of the tang. Another nice real USMC issue 1903 Springfield bolt action rifle. A great collector lot with two real USMC rifles.
