Description:

Winchester Model 1894 Fancy Sporting Rifle with factory engraving that was manufactured in 1925. The rifle has a 26-inch round barrel with full length magazine. The barrel has dovetail mounted "Partridge" front sight with blued blade and adjustment screw on the right side of the base and buckhorn, sporting style, rear sight with flat top. The upper receiver tang is drilled and tapped for a folding combination sight. The rifle has a full blue finish. The stock and forearm are "XX" fancy grain walnut with Winchester "Style H" checkering and a high polish piano finish. The top and sides of the receiver are decorated similar to Winchester No. 10 Engraving as illustrated and described on Page 23 of "HIGHLY FINISHED WINCHESTER RIFLES" reproduced on page 221 of "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R. Wilson. The engraving consists of ornamental scrolls and embossed borders with a game scene featuring a white tail buck on the left side of the receiver. The engraving continues on the top of the receiver, the lower receiver surrounding the serial number and the upper tang behind the hammer. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend and patent date: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./ NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.PATENTED AUGUST 21.1894." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber: "38-55" is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. Winchester oval "W/P" proof marks are stamped on the top of the barrel and receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1894/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG.U.S.PAT.OFF.&FGN." in three lines. The serial number, "990516", is roll-stamped across the bottom of the receiver at the junction with the forearm.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as possibly factory refurbished and upgraded. The rifle retains at least 97% plus of the factory quality blue finish. The only wear on the barrel is a series of small and very insignificant spots or finish loss along the top of the barrel; the largest of these spots is approximately 1/8-inch in diameter. The balance of the barrel retains the high polish blue finish. There are three similar spots on the bottom of the magazine; the finish on the rest of the magazine is in excellent condition. All of the blue finish is present on the forearm cap. The receiver retains nearly all of the blue finish with sharp factory engraving. Wear is limited to traces of edge wear on high points and two or three very small spots of finish loss on both sides of the receiver. The hammer, loading lever, and buttplate retain close to 99% of the original blue finish. The nicely figured, fancy grain, American walnut stock and forearm both remain in excellent condition. The checkering of the stock wrist and forearm shows almost only light handling wear and the stock and forearm retain almost 100% of the high polish piano finish. Wear is limited to three or four very insignificant handling marks on the left side of the stock between the checkered panel and the receiver.
