The Ross was invented by Scotsman Charles Ross and manufactured in Canada from 1903 until the middle of the First World War. Military versions were used by Canadian forces including snipers and others were converted into Huot Automatic Rifles (machine guns). The .280 Ross sporters were well received by marksmen and hunters. This example is marked ".280 Ross/PROVED 28 TONS" on the top of the barrel at the breech, "MADE IN CANADA 7904" on the left at the breech, and "39" on the bottom of the bolt handle. It is equipped with a pinned blade front sight, folding 500 yard notch rear sight, and a Weaver K2.5 60-B scope on weaver mounts with a German #1 style reticle. The pistol grip stock has multi-point checkering, swivel studs, a hard rubber grip cap, and a serrated shotgun buttplate.
