Description:

This is 1 of only 100 Hartford Commemorative Model 1874 Shiloh Sharps rifles manufactured, even more interesting is the story that comes with it. The rifle was special ordered by Max K. Hurlbut. Hurlbut was a man of many roles, a policeman, first city marshal for Whittier, Alaska, lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Special Forces and Intelligence Service, author, and even the foiler of a terrorist plot in Los Angeles, California. The custom built rifle features a heavy full octagon barrel with a globe and pin front sight, elevation adjustable combination full buckhorn and ladder rear sight, and a mid-range tang mounted peep sight. The top of the barrel is marked "MAX K. HURLBUT -FIRST CITY MARSHAL WHITTIER, ALASKA-". The breech end of the barrel features a thin silver inlaid band. The vibrantly casehardened action features an inlaid silver scroll reading "HARTFORD * MODEL" on the right side, standard Shiloh Sharps address on the left and the special order serial number "B090" on a silver plaque at the top just forward of the peep sight. The action is fitted with double set triggers. Mounted on a very nicely figured smooth forearm with a pewter forend cap, and straight grip stock with an inset silver badge on the right side reading "MAX K. HULBERT/FIRST/MARSHAL/WHITTIER/ALASKA/1 JUNE 1993". Fitted with a crescent style casehardened buttplate. The rifle includes a Montana Silversmiths custom Shiloh Sharps belt buckle marked with the rifles serial number, a Beech combination style front sight insert, a Whittier City Marshal uniform patch, Whittier Police patch, and a collection of correspondence and order confirmations for this rifle from the Shiloh Sharps Company and other documents. This is a very impressive rifle built for an equally impressive figure, dedicated to service from California to Alaska, the streets of Tombstone, Arizona and even places as far abroad as Taiwan earning himself the title of "The Vagabond Policeman".

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall. The rifle displays minimal collector type handling marks, exceptional finish, and highly attractive well figured wood. Mechanically excellent.
