Civil War Sharps & Hankins 1862 Navy Carbine with Sling

Government records list 6,686 of these carbines purchased for the Navy. Many saw extensive use during the war. The leather cover on the barrel is secured by a band at the muzzle and screws at the breech and was designed to protect the barrel from corrosive saltwater; many are badly damaged or entirely absent unlike this fine example. It has a band at the muzzle, blade front sight, adjustable rear sight, and standard Sharps & Hankins markings.

ConditionGood. The barrel covering is complete and has some crackling, small flakes, and general signs of honest age and use. The frame has primarily a light gray patina with some light pitting and brown patina. The brass has an honest aged patina. The stock is also good and has numerous small marks and scratches from use. The sling is fine and displays similar wear as the barrel cover. The action functions fine, and the markings are legible.
