Description:

This is an example of a very scarce early production Bergman-MARS semi-automatic pistol that is complete with an original combination leather holster/shoulder stock with an original attaching iron. These pistols actually predate and are the predecessors of the Bergman-Bayard pistols and initially were adopted by the Spanish; however, they were unable to fulfill the contract and, it was eventually canceled. The pistol was eventually produced in Liege, Belgium. The Bergman series of pistols are actually some the very first semi-automatic pistols ever produced and certainly rank right up there in rarity with the Borchardt and early 1896 Broomhandle pistols. There were only approximately 1,000 in total produced with the first 100 produced in a 30 caliber bottleneck pistol cartridge and the remaining production all made in 9mm Bergmann-Bayard cartridge. It is stamped with a double "Crown/U" firing/acceptance proof on the top of the chamber/barrel area, top rear area of the breech bolt, the left side of the frame in front of and above the trigger. On top of the pistol in front of the rear sight it is marked "BERGMAN MARS, PAT. BREV. S.G.D.G." The left side of the barrel extension is marked "CAL 9". It is correctly serial numbered "981" on the rear underside of the barrel, the base plate of the magazine, the back side of both grip panels (written in ink), and on the underside of the breech bolt. This pistol has a rust blued metal finish with checkered walnut grips and a straw colored trigger and hammer. This rare, very collectable pistol is accompanied by an original combination Bergmann leather holster/shoulder stock. The holster has an integral steel frame with an integral attaching lug on the front end. The attaching iron on the front end is color casehardened and is numbered "276".

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 98% of the restored blue finish overall with minor edge and high spot wear and some thinning and minor spotting on the grip straps. The hammer and trigger retains 75% plus of their straw colors overall with the safety lever rear sight and identification plate on top retain 98% of their heat blued finish. The grips are in very fine condition overall with nice, distinct, original checkering on the sides with only a few minor handling marks, with a very small minor crack on the upper right side grip. The combination holster/stock is in fine condition with nice intact stitching overall with the accessory pouch and top flap still complete and attached. The top of the flap where it hinges does shows some minor/light age cracking with some minor scuffing on the edge and front of the holster. The attaching iron retains 98% of its color casehardened finish overall.
