Excellent 1892 Dated and Named Fallow Deer European Skull Mount, from the Eulenburg Hunt Collection

Operated out of Liebenberg Castle in Brandenberg, and named for the family that resided in the castle, the Eulenberg hunts were a cornerstone of the political season through the late 1800s. Taking up weeks of time during Kaiser Wilhelm II's winter travels, the attendees of the hunts included some of the most important men in Imperial Germany, as well as the Emperor's closest advisors and friends. Kaiser Wilhelm II was the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, ruling both from 1888 until his abdication in 1918. He was the eldest grandson of the British Queen Victoria, and was related to many of the monarchs and princes in Europe. The skull features a 15 point rack with a 32 3/4 inch span, dated "1892" on the back of the head, bearing a brass "WR" plaque between the antlers, and marked "Eberhard Graf zu Dol (illegible, possibly Dolstad)/Eulenburg" below. The name marking wraps around the skull and follows a path around the eye sockets that makes the title difficult to interpret, and as such, Eberhard, Count at (location unknown) remains unidentified, though presumably he was a member of German nobility of sufficient import to merit an invitation to hunt. Hanging about the cap is a small parade gorget bearing the royal coat of arms of Great Britain, and marked "G R" in hand-scratched letters at the top; the meaning of the lettering is unknown (while "Georgius Rex" for King George V springs readily to mind, George did not ascend until 1910). The hardwood plaque measures 27 inches tall and 14 inches wide, with gilt paint accents and pine branch and pinecone themed raised and carved decorations. These trophies have survived traversing the Atlantic, two world wars, and the ravages of time and have been curated over a period of 40 years through descendants of Kaiser Wilhelm II, private collectors, auctions and individuals in Europe.

ConditionExcellent, with light handling marks. A fine artifact from one of the more important hunting grounds of Imperial Germany.
