Manufactured in 1912, this Winchester M1892 SRC has the extremely rare 12 inch barrel. The accompanying letter from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms lists this carbine as being removed from the purview of the National Firearms Act and classified as a curio and relic. This carbine's serial number is listed in the BATF Firearms Curios or Relic List on page 40. The included George Madis letter authenticates this carbine with an original factory 12 inch barrel. The included R.L. Wilson (photocopy) letter also authenticates this carbine and "ranks [it] as an extremely rare and desirable Winchester, worthy of the finest private or museum collection." According to Madis, "only one of each 325 carbines were made with shorter than standard barrels." Most of the baby carbines were shipped to Mexico and South America where they saw hard use. Very few have survived. In fact, it has been estimated that about five Model 1892s with 12 inch barrels exist; five 12 inch barreled 1892s, including this one, are listed by the BATF as being "cleared." The carbine features carbine sights, two-line address/patent dates marking and "38 W.C.F." on the left side of the barrel, factory oval proofs on top of the receiver and barrel at the breech, saddle ring on the left side of the receiver, three-line model/trade mark information on the upper tang, and carbine buttplate with trapdoor holding a three piece cleaning rod.

Good, with a mixture of dark brown and gray patinas and some faded period finish blue finish remaining on the magazine tube. There is some minor pitting visible under the blue. The forearm has a stabilized crack and the revarnished buttstock has a few short hairline cracks, otherwise the wood has a couple missing minor chips and some minor-moderate dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A very rare variation of the Model 1892 missing from even the most advanced Winchester collections.
