Description:

Winchester Model 1886 rifle manufactured c. 1881. This rifle has the Fourth Model receiver with single tang screw and serial number located on the lower tang. The rifle has a round barrel and full-length magazine. The steel crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The barrel has a sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and buckhorn, sporting style, rear sight. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The magazine has the second style cap secured by a screw, and the steel forearm cap is secured by screws threaded to a tension on either side of the barrel. The hammer spur has fine knurling with a border along the bottom edge. The rifle has the distinctive brass receiver with blued barrel, magazine, and forearm cap and casehardened hammer, lever, trigger, and buttplate. The loading gate has a nitre blue finish. The stock and forearm are oil-finished, straight grain American walnut. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./ KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang behind the lever latch.

Rating Definition:

Fine. 30% plus blue on the barrel and magazine remains with the balance having faded to a plum patina. The barrel has several minor dents and one spot of light pitting on the left side. The Winchester legend is clear. The forearm cap retains about half of the blue finish. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever have aged to a mottled brown patina. The case colors on the buttplate have a mottled dark patina with some silvering on the high points. The loading gate has about 30% of the original nitre blue finish. The brass receiver is in very fine condition with an attractive mustard yellow patina. The side plate joints are perfect. The stock and forearm are in very good overall condition with moderate handling wear. This is an attractive original example of a Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle.
