Scarce Documented Sharps Model 1874 German Pattern (Schuetzen) Rifle with Factory Letter

According to Frank Sellers in "Sharps Firearms," only 69 of these rifles were manufactured in June 1877 to October 1878. This variation "was designed by Charles E. Overbaugh of the New York Central Schuetzen Corps," and "All but 3 were purchased by members of that club, most of them by its president, C.F. Generich." Double set triggers were standard. Includes a factory letter that lists this gun as "invoiced March 13, 1878, to Captain C.F. Generich of New York Central Schuetzen Corp. of 781 8th Avenue New York City. There were twenty similar guns in this order. It is noted as the rare Model 1874 German Pattern or Schuetzen Off-Hand Rifle." The factory records listed it as a .40 caliber rifle using the 1 11/16 inch case with a full octagon barrel, cheekpiece, sporting buttplate, globe front sight, Vernier mid-range peep sight, 9 lbs. 11 oz. weight, and overall price of $42. Current weight is 9 lbs. 10.6 oz. (round up) and has the listed features as well as the "Old Reliable" banner and Bridgeport address on top ahead of the Lawrence patent notch and folding ladder rear sight, "CALIBRE 40" on top at the breech, "1 11/16" in small print on the right flat, double set triggers, smooth Schnabel tip forearm, and matching serial numbers are on the barrel and action (not further taken down).

ConditionFine. 50% original blue and 40% original casehardened finish remains. The balance has primarily smooth gray and brown patina, and there are spots of slight spotting. The buttplate has an attractive aged patina. The refinished wood is also fine and has glossy finish, small dents and flakes, and scattered scrapes. Mechanically excellent. As Dr. Moore notes in the letter, this rifle is a true Sharps rarity and has been underappreciated historically by Sharps collectors.
