Description:

This is a professionally restored Indian War Era Colt Model 1873 Cavalry Single Action frame that was rebuilt to 1877 specifications. The factory letter states that serial number 35337 Colt revolver was delivered as 1 of 203 to the U.S. Government by Colt on February 13, 1877. The letter verifies the caliber, blue finish and the barrel length with stocks "Not Listed". The revolver has the standard subdued, military blue finish on the barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap and casehardened frame and hammer. The one-piece, oiled walnut grip has the date, "1877" stamped above the acceptance mark of Ordnance Inspector Lt. David A. Lyle (script letters "DAL") on the lower left side. The lower right side of the grip is stamped with the script initials "JTC" (Ordnance Sub-Inspector John T. Cleveland). Small "J.T.C." inspection marks are stamped on the cylinder, right grip heel and the underside of the barrel. The revolver has the early, round ejector rod head and Cavalry pattern hammer with extended checkering on the spur. The top of the barrel is marked with the "Second Style Condensed Block Letter Address: "-COLT"S PT. F.A. M.F.G. Co HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A.-" The address has a distinctive hyphen at either end. A small "P" proof mark is stamped on the underside of the barrel perpendicular to the bore in front of the "J.T.C." sub-inspection mark. The left side of the frame is stamped with the "three date/three line" patent marking followed by "U.S." The full serial number, "35337", is located on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "5337" is located on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number, "4058".

Rating Definition:

Professionally restored to nearly mint condition. The blue finish is a very close match to the dull military blue and nearly all remains. The 'feathered" polishing marks are present on either side of the front sight. The casehardened finish on the frame and hammer have vivid colors. The oiled walnut grip shows minimal wear with sharp restamped "1877/ DAL" and "JTC". The grip appears to have been carefully refinished and the inspection marks improved slightly. All marking are very sharp. The action is crisp and functions fine. This is an attractive restoration of a scarce Indian War Colt Single Action Army revolver.
