Description:

The lot consists of a uniform tunic and trousers, constructed in the Luftwaffe's traditional dark blue-gray felt, as well as a camouflage smock printed in single-sided non-reversible spring/summer "splittermuster" pattern. The tunic is outfitted for a gefreiter (private first class), with a set of red-trimmed green collar tabs with alloy eagle emblems, a set of red trimmed blue-gray shoulder boards, a silver ribbon chevron on the left sleeve, the Luftwaffe eagle (secured with a zig-zag stitch) on the right breast, and a set of blue rayon pockets with the size markings "39/60", "96" and "45/59" over a faint manufacturer's code on the left interior breast pocket. The trousers are lined about the waist and pockets in blue rayon, with no visible markings. The camouflage jacket is marked on the inside left breast pocket "0/0230/0941" over the size markings "44/66", "90" and "40/68", with a set of blue-gray shoulder boards in red trim and a zig-zag stitched Luftwaffe eagle on the right breast. Distinct from the famous Fallschirmjaeger "bone sack" jump smocks, the ground force smock was designed more in line with the traditional Wehrmacht uniform tunic, with a set of internal hardware for load-bearing hooks (hooks absent), two front pockets and one internal pocket, and a set of vent holes in the armpit regions. The collar region is double-sided and fitted with buttons and straps, so it may be turned up against the weather. The current shoulder board configuration would be an end-user modification, as period-of-use photographs show these smocks as having been issued with a proprietary matching fabric board; installing standard boards on camo gear was a very popular modification, with some units going so far as to mount the needed straps and buttons on items that never came with them in the first place. A set of the original style boards, constructed from "splittermuster" herringbone twill (both sides in spring/summer colors) are also included. Notes from the consignor attribute the piece to the collection of Bob Johnson, who reportedly acquired the item c.1978 from the family of the G.I. who originally brought the set home as a war trophy, and that the camouflage boards were included in the pocket of the smock on acquisition.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall, with some minor staining and handling marks. There are slight differences in color and material between the camouflage boards. A few small holes are present in the interior felt of the tunic, and the ground smock shows a bit of excess thread in the stitching, particularly around the front buttons.
