Description:

Originally established in the 1930s as a special paramilitary detachment of the Prussian Police, the namesake unit of Luftwaffe Chief Hermann Goering would grow and expand through the war, eventually reaching a full corps. The grouping consists of a shirt, tie, tunic, trousers, leather belt with holster and a one-piece alloy dog tag; the grouping (minus dog tag) is attributed by the consignor to the inventory of the noted collector George Petersen and can be seen (sans holster and dog tag) on pages 64-66 and 248 (the latter in color) of the book "Field Uniforms of Germany's Panzer Elite" by Edwards and Pruett; according to the consignor, Petersen acquired the item in trade c.1960s/1970s at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. The tunic is black wool construction, with the silver-trimmed blue "HERMANN GORING" cuff title on the right sleeve, a set of rose pink waffenfarbe trimmed Oberleutnant's shoulder boards, tightly stitched Luftwaffe eagle on the right breast, silver piped collar with the distinctive white piped "totenkopf" tabs, and a set of 3 medals on the left breast; the Silver Wound Badge, First Class Iron Cross and the Ground Assault Badge. The death's heads of the collar tabs are secured with a length of black string, run through the eye and nose holes and punched clean through the collar; while this is atypical for German panzer tabs, the threading can be clearly seen in the close-ups in "Panzer Elite", suggesting a period variation or modification. The interior is lined in brown cloth, with blue twill adjustment straps, "Z" marked on the right interior pocket, and the right breast stamped "Holz & Binkowski" over the size marking of "41 42/92/57 62". The shirt is a light blue and the tie black, neither with visible maker's marks. The trousers are also black wool, with white twill lining, a faint ink stamp (possibly merchant markings) right next to the top fly buttonholes, and the size marks "76 90/110 104" over "40" inside the waistband. The dog tag is alloy construction, perforated across the center and marked "0 2" and "2./Pz.Rgt.H.G." on both sides. The holster and belt are both brown leather construction, both unmarked, with the holster sized for a PPK.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall, with some light stains and handling marks. The badge loops on the tunic are damaged, and holes have been pierced in the material to act as replacement mounting points for the Wound Badge and Iron Cross.
