Description:

This is an example of a Third Model 1876 Northwest Mounted Police Carbine as manufactured by Winchester in 1885. The accompanying Winchester letter verifies the serial number and that it was received into and shipped out of the warehouse on April 18, 1885 to order number 20202. Mounted Police. The guns serial number is also listed on page 186 in "Arms & Accoutrements of The Mounted Police 1873-1973" by Phillips and Klancher as one of the Winchester Model 1876 Mounted Police arms. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address/King's patent dates in front of the rear sight and "45-75/W.C.F." at the breech. The brass elevator is marked "45-75", the upper tang is marked "MODEL 1876" with fancy brackets and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. There is the letter "G" stamped on the bottom of the frame directly ahead of the trigger. Blade front sight and folding "Spanish Meter" rear sight graduated 2-10 on the ladder and 1-5 on the left side of the base. A saddle ring and stud are mounted on the left rear of the receiver, integral Third Model dust cover rail and mounted with a full forearm with iron end cap and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate. The right rear of the stock is stamped with the "NWMP" cartouche.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel has a smooth brown patina and the receiver has a smooth mottled silver and brown patina. The wood is good having been freshened with a coat of varnish some time ago. Overall there are a number of dents, dings, scratches and small divots. It appears that a number, (more than likely a the "APP" and issue number) have been scratched off of the stock directly behind the lower tang. The remains of a partial number is all that's visible. The cartouche is legible. The barrel and receiver markings are clear. The action is excellent.
