Description:

British flintlock carbine made by Joseph Gully of London circa 1799-1804. The carbine has two steel barrel bands with ramrod pipes on the left side. A third ramrod pipe is attached to the left stock flat in lieu of the side plate. The carbine is equipped with a unique, 28 1/2 inch, socket bayonet with a broad, 3 inch, leaf-shaped tip. When the bayonet is not fixed it is stored reversed on the muzzle with the spearpoint fitted in a compartment on the trigger guard finial. The carbine has a bright finished barrel, barrel bands and lock. The trigger guard and butt are brass and the stock is oil finished English walnut. The barrel has a rectangular bayonet lug that doubles as a front sight. The lock plate has a fenced, iron pan and goose-neck hammer. The maker's name "Gully" is engraved in script on the lock plate below the pan. The edges of the lock plate and lower portion of the hammer are decorated with single line engraved borders. Oval London "Crown/V" and "Crown/GP" commercial proofmarks are stamped on the top of the barrel. The bayonet and ramrod are not marked.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The carbine shows typical storage and handling wear. The barrel, lock and barrel bands are partially covered with an old varnish finish. The exposed metal surfaces have some scattered age discoloration. The stock is in good-very good condition with sharp edges. Wear is limited to minor handling and storage marks. The spearpoint bayonet is in good condition with scattered age discoloration. This is an interesting and possibly one-of-a-kind example of a commercial, Napoleonic Wars era British flintlock carbine with spearpoint socket bayonet.
