Description:

Commonly called "Potsdam" muskets after the Potsdam Arsenal where many of these muskets originated. These muskets and rifled-muskets were imported in large numbers during the American Civil War. This example was manufactured c. 1833 and later converted to percussion, rifled, and fitted with long range sights. Features blade, notch, and folding ladder sights, "crown/FW/Saarn" on the lock, "705" on top of the barrel, "462" on the left barrel flat and left stock flat, various Prussian proof and inspection marks, and "110313/40 084/1833" on the buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with brown patina, mild pitting and oxidation, dark aged patina on the brass, mostly distinct markings, a splice at the nose of the lock, chipping and opening of the lock inlet at the tail of the lock, some chips along the ramrod channel, and general moderate wear.

Description:

Features blade and notch sights, an unclear maker mark under the "crown/FW" mark on the lock (appears to start with "Lug"), Prussian markings on the left stock flat, and "33550" on the buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good as converted to percussion with dark brown patina and oxidation on the iron throughout, pitting and vice marks concentrated at the breech, dark aged patina on the brass, moderate scrapes and dings, and a large chip in the stock on the right by the breech and other small chips and minor cracks. Mechanically fine.
