Exceptional Military Inspected Moore New York Marked Militia Style Flintlock "Kentucky" Rifle

Few firearms from American history are as iconic as the famous "Kentucky rifle" more correctly known as the American long rifle. These slender rifles became enshrined in our national consciousness in the hands of Daniel Morgan and his elite Provisional Rifle Corps and the "Over the Mountain Men" during the American Revolution and solidified as part of our national saga in the hands of Andrew Jackson's Kentucky riflemen and later the defenders of the Alamo. This rifle is very similar to others identified as militia rifles from the early 1800s and is somewhat similar the 1792/1794 contract rifles manufactured for the U.S. government other than the slightly longer barrel length. The plain patch box, relatively plain maple stock, .49 caliber and overall no-nonsense build style is consistent with known militia rifles. The barrel is marked "MOORE" and "N YORK" in different fonts on top at the breech and has an inspector mark stamped that ends in "B" on the left flat. It is equipped with standard "Kentucky" rifle style blade and notch sights and a plain trigger. The lock has light engraving but no markings. The patch box is plain and has a heel release.

ConditionVery fine, totally original overall with mottled gray and brown patina, mild oxidation and pitting primarily centered at the breech, dark aged patina on the brass furniture, and minor marks and scratches. The front lock screw is a replacement, and a couple of the barrel pins are absent. The stock is also very fine and has attractive subtle flame figure, minor marks and scratches, some minor cracks, small chip at the tail of the lock at the sear, and a splice at the toe. Mechanically fine. Overall, this is a rare and attractive American long rifle likely purpose built for defending early America.
