Excellent Fabrique Nationale FN49 Luxembourg Army Contract Semi-Automatic Sniper Rifle

This is an excellent example of a post-war FN Model 49 semi-automatic sniper rifle produced by FN Herstal for the Luxembourg Army. This series of rifles was the very first attempt by Fabrique Nationale Herstal to produce a successful semi-automatic rifle in the late 1940s/early 1950s. This Luxembourg contract was issued in May 1953 to FN Herstal for a total quantity of approximately 200 rifles. These were produced within their own specific serial number range of approximately 7001 to 7203, with the scopes also produced in their own specific serial number range of "1-200". The scopes that were originally used were manufactured by the Belgian company of OIP. The actual scope mount and base was originally designed in the U.S. in 1947 and were sold commercially under the trade name of "ECHO" by the E.C. Herkner Company of Boise, Idaho. At that time, they were a very well-known commercial scope mount company that also manufactured these same type of scope mounts and bases for various U.S. made commercial hunting rifles. Originally, they were designed with a semi-split scope ring intended for the smaller 3/4 inch scope. In 1951, they designed the mount with a larger split-ring for the new 1 inch scopes, just at the right time for the FN contract. The bases (or brackets) were manufactured in Belgium with the new mount provided to FN Herstal. The spacing between the bracket and scope mounts were standardized, so the mounts were not numbered to the rifles. These rifles are discussed on pages 106 and 107 of the book: "The FN-49" by Johnson. This rifle has the "AL" crest on the receiver ring and the FN factory firing proofs on the left side. The right side flat of the receiver is marked "FABRIQUE NATIONALE D' ARMES DE GUERRE_HERSTAL BELGIQUE". The receiver, stock, bolt and top cover are stamped with serial number "7033". The scope is the later third model with the late style turrets with a three-post reticle. The top of the scope tube is marked: "ABL-1951/V5-0S784-010B.G./TIR.EL.TELESC.SCHERPSCH/No.866", and the side of the mount (between the locking screws) is marked: "ECHO/E.C. HERKNER Co./Boise Idaho". It comes with a set of leather lens covers. It is fitted with its original walnut stock and handguard set that is correctly fitted with the second pattern wooden cheekpiece. It is complete with ten shot box magazine.

ConditionExcellent with 98% of the original black painted finish overall with light edge and high spot wear overall. The stock and handguard are also in excellent condition with only light handling marks on the sides mixed with a couple of light pressure dents. The scope mount and scope retain 95% of the respective finishes with clear distinct factory markings. The optics are clear, and the reticle is complete.
