Collector's Lot of Two Webley Military .455 Revolvers

A) Webley & Son Mark III Double Action Revolver

Blade front and latch notch rear sights, with London & Birmingham address on the top strap, "MARK "III" 455" on the left side of the top strap, and the winged bullet logo on the left side of the frame. Birmingham proofs in the cylinder flues, with matching numbers on the rear cylinder face and the barrel lug. Checkered grips.

ConditionVery good, with about half of the blue finish, showing an applied artificial mixed gray and brown patina on the front of the barrel, scattered spotting, and handling marks. The grips are very good, with some scuffs and dings. The hammer hangs up a bit on the way down, otherwise mechanically good.

B) Historic Webley & Scott Mark V Double Action Revolver with Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Captain Inscription

Manufactured from 1913-1915, this Mark V revolver is fairly typical for the model, which was one of the sidearms sent afield by the British for the First World War. Distinguishing this example is the inscription on the left side of the barrel, "CAPT. J.A. KIRKWOOD, 2/6th BATT. A.&S. Hrs". Records from the era verify a J.A. Kirkwood as a captain with the 6th Battalion of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. Records are limited; he is noted as having made lieutenant with the unit about 1905, though his exact activities are unknown. Also known as Princess Louise's Sutherland & Argyll Highlanders, the regiment and its predecessors distinguished themselves in the Crimean War (being the "Thin Red Line" of Balaklava fame), the 2nd Boer War, multiple points on the Western Front in WWI, the Pacific, European and Mediterranean Theaters in WWII; and in Korea.

ConditionVery good, with 30% of the original blue finish, which is concentrated on the frame and top-strap around the cylinder. A mixed brown/gray patina is showing overall, with scattered spotting, etching on the cylinder, bright edge wear and scattered handling marks. The retention screw for the cam lever is absent. The heavily worn grips are good, with a slightly undersized left panel and some mild scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent.
