Description:

Developed in 1909 and manufactured in very limited quantities (102 total) through 1913, the 1909 Bayonet was one of the U.S. military's assorted attempts at "hybrid" weaponry, capable of both utility and combat service. This example was intended to serve as a brush/jungle clearing tool while also being a functional bayonet for the U.S. 1903 rifle. Like many other hybrids, the 1909 was put through its paces but passed over in favor of more conventional stabbing implements. In form the weapon bears a very strong resemblance to the Plumb-brand bolo knife, with the hilt altered and contoured to mate flush with a 1905-style bayonet pommel, and an appropriate muzzle ring worked into the crossguard. Overall length is 18 3/8 inches, with a 14 inch chisel-ground blade, 2 1/4 inches wide at the curved belly, marked "SA/(bomb)/1911" and "US/16" on the ricasso area. The grips are smooth hardwood. With a "ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL/1911./H.E.K." marked leather sheath.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The metal shows a mixed gray patina, with some light edge nicks and scattered spotting. The grips are very good, with some light dents, and the sheath is very fine with some minor cracks and verdigris.
