Highly Desirable U.S. Springfield Model 1903 Bolt Action Sniper Rifle with Model 1913 Warner & Swasey Telescopic Sight

World War I production Springfield Model 1903 manufactured in 1917. The rifle is fitted with Model 1913 sight mount bracket and Warner-Swasey Model of 1913 Telescopic Musket Sight. The rifle falls within the accepted serial number range of WWI M1903 rifles fitted with Model 1913 W&S telescopic sights. The Ordnance Department purchased at least 5,041 of the 5.2 power Model 1913 W&S telescopic sights in 1917-18. Approximately 1,000 Model 1903 W&S sights were mounted on M1903 rifles; these rifles were the primary U.S. Army sniper rifles during WWI. This rifle is in standard WWI configuration with casehardened receiver and cocking piece. The bolt, rear sight base, upper and lower barrel bands, trigger guard, floor plate and buttplate are blued. The rear sight has a bright face, 2,850 yard center volley notch and concave elevation and windage knobs. The trigger face is grooved. The stock has two reinforcing bolts and smooth buttplate. The high hump handguard has the rear sight relief cut and two spring clips. The Rock Island Arsenal bolt is stamped with the steel lot code "R 1" at the base of the handle. The safety and magazine cut-off have Springfield Armory block letter markings. The receiver has the standard Springfield Armory markings. The barrel is stamped "SA/ORDNANCE SHELL & FLAME/10-17/A" below the front sight base. The front sight base and front sight have matching index marks. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with a block "E.H.D." final inspection mark enclosed in a rectangle. A encircled, block "P" proof mark is stamped on the bottom of the stock wrist behind the trigger guard. The W&S Model 1913 mounting bracket is attached to the left side of the receiver. The bracket is secured by the correct over-sized screws which are center-staked on the inside of the receiver. The left side of the stock is inletted to accept the bracket. The Model 1913 W&S telescopic sight has a black enamel finish, casehardened elevation knob, and large rubber eyepiece. The right side of the scope body is roll stamped with the serial number "4910" and W&S address and patent dates. Plates showing wind correction and drift are screwed to the top of the scope body. The scope mount is not stamped with a rifle serial number. The rifle is complete with a russet leather case with carrying strap manufactured by "DIAMOND "D". The back of the case is stamped with the company name and logo and "A.B.D" inspection mark. A soldier's name: "HOPKINS" and the unit designation "E-2-6" and "W-5-9" are lightly written on the back of the case above and below the manufacturer's markings.

ConditionFine. The sight mount bracket and screws are original and are properly fitted. The W&S telescopic sight is in very fine condition and retains 90% of the original black enamel finish. The rubber eye cup is original and remains in good, flexible condition. The telescopic sight optics are in good overall condition. The rifle retains 40% of the original blue and casehardened finish with normal service wear. The stock is in very fine condition with minimal handling wear, sharp edges to the grasping grooves and crisp proof and inspection marks. The right side of the handguard has nine neatly cut notches ahead of the barrel band - significance unknown. The scope case remains in fine condition with smooth surfaces and clear markings. This is a fine original example of a WWI Model 1903 Springfield Sniper rifle with Model 1913 W&S telescopic sight. Very few originals exist!
