Description:

This is an early example of a WWII Johnson Model 1941 semi-automatic rifle that was manufactured by the Cranston Arms Co. The rifle has the distinctive detachable 22 inch barrel, one-piece cast and machined receiver that has the perforated barrel shroud on the front end, and ten-round rotary magazine. They have a parkerized metal finish with a bright polished bolt and a two-piece oil finished walnut stock. The receiver is roll-marked "CAL. 30-06 SEMI. AUTO./"JOHNSON AUTOMATICS"/MODEL OF 1941/MADE IN PROVIDENCE, R.I., U.S.A./8209". The right rear side of the receiver is stamped with a small five-pointed star indicating it was inspected and accepted by the Netherlands Purchasing Commission. Directly below that is an inverted triangle, marked inside with "CRANSTON/ARMS/CO.". The bolt is numbered "B5511" (numbered components on Johnson rifles usually did not match). The face of the barrel collar is correctly stamped with ".30 06/41". The receiver has a tangent style rear sight graduated in meters. It has the distinctive two piece walnut buttstock and forend with the rotary magazine in between. The U.S. Marine Corps tested the Johnson rifle in 1941 and in early 1942, obtained a limited number of the Dutch contract Model 1941 rifles. Some of these were subsequently issued to the 1st Parachute Battalion. Most of the Dutch Model 1941 rifles remained un-issued and were sold as surplus in the 1950s and 1960s.

Rating Definition:

Fine as modified with 90% of an old refurbished blue/black type finish on all the metal parts. The wood components are good as the buttstock has been shortened and a red recoil pad added (LOP 13 1/2 inches), and it has an old repaired crack on the right side, just off the recoil spring cover. There is also a repaired crack behind the center section of the magazine that runs back to the safety lever. Additionally, although fitted with the correct front sight and collar, the barrel is actually a 1903A3 replacement barrel fitted to this rifle, as it lacks any factory proof marks and there are two traverse pin marks on the side.
